The US Youth Poet Laureate who performed ‘The Hill We Climb’ at Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Ms Gorman, 22, was named Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles at the age of 16. Later, while studying at Harvard, she became the National Youth Poet Laureate, chosen from five finalists. She is also the first person to hold the title.
Born in LA, California, in 1998, she and her twin sister Gabrielle were raised by their teacher mother Joan Wicks.
Ms Gorman had a speech impediment as a child and described herself as a “weird child” who enjoyed reading and writing.
She also says she has an auditory processing disorder and is hypersensitive to sound.
She became interested in poetry as a young girl and said she was always scribbling down verses at school.
Ms Gorman is believed to have been chosen by Joe Biden’s wife Jill to read at his inauguration as the Inaugural Poet.
She became the sixth poet – and the youngest – to perform at a presidential inauguration and follows in the footsteps of Maya Angelou.
