Tiwa Savage Shares Her Experience About Skin Bleaching

Nigerian Afropop Queen, Tiwa Savage, has given Nigerians something to talk about after she revealed she attempted bleaching her skin at the age of 14.

In a recent interview with Allure Magazine, Tiwa opened up about the struggles with her self-esteem as a teenager. She described how difficult it was for her to fit in as a black girl in the midst of her white friends at school. Elaborating on this, she gave a detailed narration of how she tried bleaching her skin at the young age of 14.

According to the singer, she would mix lemons with her body creams to make her skin lighter. She eventually stopped when her mother discovered her little stash and was disappointed in her. In her words, she wrote:

“I actually did try to bleach my skin when I was about, I think 14 or 15 years. Even now I have patches on my back. My mom was cleaning my room and saw the cream that I used to mix with lemons. She wasn’t angry. It was more her disappointment. So I stopped but I was always insecure about being dark.

I have a platform and I’m digging more into my responsibility for younger people, When I started my career I wasn’t embracing who I was fully yet because I was just trying to crack into the market”
