Nigeria has been ranked the fourth-best team of the 12 countries that will be featuring at the 2020 Olympics behind Australia, Spain and the USA, according to the latest FIBA Power Rankings.

The power rankings, which is different from the FIBA World Ranking presented by Nike, is based on the recent performances of the teams. It is determined by dividing the sum of all the win points, tie points, schedule points and bonus points by the number of games played.

D’Tigers placed fourth after their astonishing victories over world No.1 USA and fourth ranked Argentina during their exhibition games in Las Vegas recently.

The West Africans were beaten 108-69 by Australia, their opponents in their opening game at the Olympic Games on July 25 at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

Australia are No.1 in the pre-Olympic power rankings after earning three warm-up games victories over the USA, Argentina and Nigeria in Las Vegas.
Spain, second in the world, are also second-placed on the power rankings.

After losing to Nigeria and Australia in the exhibition games in Las Vegas, USA placed third in the power rankings. The Americans, who are aiming to win their fourth Olympic gold in a row, beat Argentina 108-80 in their final exhibition match.

Others are France, Italy, Argentina, Germany, Czech Republic, Japan and Iran.

Four arrested over online abuse of England players

Four people have so far been arrested in connection with online abuse directed at England players, the UK Football Policing Unit said on Thursday.

Investigations continue into abusive posts targeting Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka after England’s defeat on penalty kicks to Italy in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday.

A statement issued on Thursday read, “Following England’s defeat against Italy on Sunday a torrent of racist comments aimed at some of the team’s black players appeared on platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

“A hate crime investigation is under way by the UKFPU, with a dedicated team of investigators working their way through a large number of reports from across the country.

“So far, dozens of data applications have been submitted to social media companies and four people have been arrested by local police forces.”

Chief Constable Mark Roberts, the National Police Chiefs’ Council football policing lead, said, “The racial abuse aimed at our own players following Sunday night’s game is utterly vile.

“It has quite rightly shocked and appalled people across the country.”

On Wednesday Greater Manchester Police confirmed a 37-year-old man from Ashton-upon-Mersey had been arrested after social media posts were directed towards England players following Sunday’s match.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday that the Government was extending the scope of football banning orders to include online abuse.

Banning orders exclude people from attending matches for between a three and 10-year period. (dpa/NAN)

Australia defeat Nigeria 108-69 in exhibition game

Australia trounced Nigeria 108-69 to win their third game in a row at the Las Vegas exhibition series on Wednesday as both teams continue their preparation for the Olympics.

The loss is Mike Brown’s first since taking over as coach of D’Tigers in 2020.

The efficient Aussies displayed grit and technical prowess as they swept D’Tigers apart in the first quarter taking a 13-point lead to end 26-13. The third ranked nation in the world continued their dominance in the second quarter ending with a comfortable 20-point lead – 49-29.

The Australians opened a 38-point lead to end the quarter 84-46, then clocking the 100-point mark to win by 39 points ending the game 108-69.

The Australians made it three wins in a row with Chris Gouding scoring 21 points, three rebounds and four steals. He hit 100 per cent accuracy from the three-point line making all seven attempts.

Josh Okogie and Obi Emegano led D’Tigers in scoring with 10 points a piece while Jahlil Okafor had seven points and five rebounds and Ike Iroegbu also scored seven points in a game they will want to forget in a hurry.

Nigeria have had an impressive run during the exhibition series beating powerhouses USA and Argentina before suffering their first loss.

D’Tigers will face the Boomers in their first game at the Olympics on July 25 and will be hoping to get a better return.
